BREAKING NEWS: Penrith Panthers Star Nathan Cleary Invests $7.5 Million to Transform Home Into Shelter for Homeless Youth
In a remarkable display of compassion and community leadership, Penrith Panthers halfback and NRL star Nathan Cleary has pledged $7.5 million of his own money to convert his personal property into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth in Western Sydney.
The 27-year-old playmaker, already hailed as one of rugby league’s brightest talents, is now being recognized for his efforts off the field—with his initiative aimed at addressing the growing crisis of youth homelessness in the region.
“This is Bigger Than Football”
In a heartfelt statement released earlier today, Cleary said:
“Footy has given me everything, but I know not everyone gets the same opportunities. This is about giving back—about creating a safe place for kids who are doing it tough and showing them they matter.”
The shelter, which will be named “Cleary House”, will provide emergency accommodation, counseling services, education support, and long-term pathways for at-risk youth aged 16–24. Construction on the redevelopment is set to begin later this year, with the facility expected to open by late 2026.
Community and League Applaud the Move
Penrith Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher praised Cleary’s action as “nothing short of inspirational,” adding:
“Nathan has always been a leader on the field—but this act of kindness will have a generational impact. He’s showing what it truly means to wear the Panthers jersey.”
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo also weighed in, commending Cleary for his “unparalleled generosity” and urging other players and stakeholders to follow his lead in addressing social issues.
A Growing Crisis
According to the most recent government data, more than 44,000 young Australians experience homelessness on any given night, often due to domestic violence, family breakdown, or lack of affordable housing. Advocates say projects like Cleary’s are crucial in providing both shelter and hope.
A Legacy Beyond the Game
Already a multiple premiership winner and Clive Churchill Medallist, Cleary’s latest move signals a legacy that transcends rugby league. As social media flooded with messages of support and admiration, one fan summed it up best:
