What Lee Ryder was told by Eddie Howe prior to Bournemouth

If you’re a neutral football fan, it’s safe to assume that you’re tired of seeing Newcastle United every single week on TV.

Eight of the Magpies’ first eleven Premier League games have been televised live in the UK; five of those matches have been shown on Sky Sports at 5.30 p.m. on Saturdays.

The match this weekend against Bournemouth is scheduled for an evening start, and Eddie Howe’s team will be playing under the lights at Vitality Stadium prior to the international break.

This is, however, officially the last opportunity to watch Newcastle on Sky Sports at that time until the next session because of a Premier League regulation.

Clubs are only allowed to be given the 5.30pm Sky TV slot six times per campaign, while the same number is allocated to TNT Sports’ 12.30pm slot on Saturday.

For the Saturday 7.45pm, Sunday 2pm and Sunday 4.30pm packages, there is a maximum allocation of five and a minimum of two.

Newcastle’s December schedule includes live matches against Tottenham on Sky Sports and Manchester United on TNT Sports at the start of the month.

The broadcaster will also air the match between Liverpool on New Year’s Day and Chelsea in the Carabao Cup a few days later.

The current TV rights package, which is split between Sky, TNT Sports, and Amazon and includes 200 games per season, is worth an incredible £5.1 billion over three years.

In an online meeting last week, all 20 Premier League clubs did, however, approve the new TV proposals, which will now be presented to TV networks in the upcoming weeks.

If the new plans are implemented, broadcast revenue for Newcastle and its 19 top flight rivals would increase, and more games would be made available.

A new broadcaster or streaming service may also be able to acquire the rights, but it’s highly likely that Amazon and TNT Sports will look to expand their schedules, and Sky Sports will probably want an even larger piece of the action.
